This novel was always a challenge for book critics and theorists.In an interesting way, it describes and analyzes the problems that emerge in communication between people.
The characters in Krleza’s novel try to enter the lives and hearts of the corrupt and two-faced 19th century Croatian bourgouise while at the same time, describing the tension and distance evolving between them.Analyzing the characters, the novel describes the return of Filip Latinovic to a small village after 23 years.He tries to fit into his mother’s group of friends, who are leading two-faced and immoral lives.Burdened by bad memories from his childhood, Filip struggles with his principles while doing so.In a spiritual way, he writes about his crisis of identity, his uncertainty about modern intellectualism and of the meaning of the arts.
