Let the Celebrations Begin!:Library Grand Re-Opening Set for Sunday, August 29

Streetsville-- The invitation you have been anxiously awaiting for has finally arrived:  the Library and Cultural Society is pleased to invite you to a grand opening in celebration of our move to Streetsville park!

We will be officially opening our doors at our new home upstairs in the bbq building of the Croatian Parish Recreational Park "Father Kamber" in Streetsville this Sunday, August 29 between 1-5pm.   Our board members will be on hand to answer your questions about the collection, our various activities, and how you can contribute your skills by becoming involved.

Hang around immediately after mass for our grand opening kick-off as the Library and Cultural Society accepts a generous $2500 donation from the Canadian-Croatian Chamber of Commerce.  At the kick-off, Library members Ana Bacic and Ruzica Vujcic will also be presented by Consul-General Ljubinko Matesic with international awards for their contributions to the preservation of the Croatian language in the diaspora.

See you there!

The Library has Moved.....

After almost 10 years at our former Streetsville location, the Library has moved!

We are now located in the Croatian "Father Kamber" park in Streetsville at 4525 Mississauga Road (just south of Eglington Avenue and a few doors down from the Mississauga Church of Croatian Martyrs).

That's right: IN the park.  Few members of our community know that in the same building as the BBQ house's roasting spits is a spacious and modern apartment.  The Library has rented part of it to house our library collection and provide space for our cultural programming.

Please note: When visiting us, don't forget to bring your Library membership card--an up-to-date paid Library membership always entitles you to enter the park, for the purpose of gaining access to the Library, free of charge--see our web site, www.crocanlibrary.ca, for Library opening hours.

....and Changed its Name

Although you may not have known it from our name, we are not, and have never been, "just a library".

In keeping with our mandate to promote Croatian culture and heritage in Canada, over the years the Library has organized lectures, screened movies and run Croatian programmes and events for kids--to name only a few of our activities.

To better reflect this mandate, we have changed our name from the Croatian Canadian Library and Reading Room to the Croatian Canadian Library and Cultural Society.  While our name may have changed, we are still a registered Canadian charity dependent on the community's generosity for our programming budget.

If you like what we do, please continue to remember the Library and Cultural Society in your charitable donations!

Library Member Ana Bacic Wins Prestigious Silvije Strahimir Kranjcevic Literary Prize

Since 1984, the Croatian Heritage Foundation in Rijeka has been holding a "Silvije Strahimir Kranjcevic" literary competition for emigrant Croats.  This competition is open to Croat emigrees around the world to encourage the preservation of our spoken language and heritage in the diaspora.

We are delighted to announce that this year's winner in the prose category is Library member Ana Bacic for her submission of an adolescent themed novel.

The award was named after Silvije Strahimir Kranjcevic, a 19th century Croatian poet born in Senj, in recognition of his writings about the Croatian people and their everyday life.  For more information on this prize, read the March edition of "Matica", published by the Croatian Heritage Foundation.

Congratualtions Ana on your prize and on your well-deserved international recognition!
